AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR WEDDING DJ

A caricature of James our wedding DJ drawn at a wedding by Wayne Savage (www.crazycartoons.net).

Q: Who are you and how long have you been DJing?

A: My name is James and I have been a professional wedding DJ since the summer of 2006.

Q: How did you get into DJing for weddings?

A: It was really down to a stroke of good fortune. I used to rent a business unit on Marks Hall farm. The farmer is also the owner of the Reid Rooms and the Room in the Rodings wedding venues. I was approached by him to DJ for a wedding at the Reid Rooms when one of his regular DJs was unavailable. The night was a great success and I thoroughly enjoyed myself - so I decided to make a career of it!

Q: Did they ask you back?

A: Over the course of the following year, I built up a good relationship with both venues and I am now privileged to be one of the two DJs that they use for their in-house wedding packages.

Q: What is the highlight of your DJing career?

A: I was recommended to the Scouts association by a bride who had booked me to DJ at her wedding. They were running an event called "Reunion 2009". This is where all of the scout leaders and adult volunteers get together at Gilwell Park for a weekend of activities. I was booked to DJ on the main stage on the Friday night. I was told just to bring my music and plug into their sound system and lighting rig. When I arrived, I discovered to my absolute delight that I was DJing in a huge arena to over 2000 people. It was AWESOME!!!!!

Q: What types of music do you have in your collection?

A: I have a very varied collection of music. I am solely a wedding DJ and as such, I have built up a really brilliant collection of songs from a range of genres including: Rock 'n' Roll, Funk, Soul, Motown, Disco, 80s Pop, 80s Electro, Ska, Rock, Indie, Britpop, 90s Rap & Hip Hop, 90s Dance, 90s Pop, Garage along with all of the latest Chart Hits. I am also happy to play all of the usual Cheesy Wedding Dance Songs if you like them!

Q: Do you play requests?

A: Yes, Yes, Yes!! I will play as few or as many of your requests as you would like. Sometimes I get asked to play a handful of songs that have a particularly significant meaning to the couple. On other occasions, I am given a long list of songs that the couple like and I will be asked to play as many of them as possible. You will be pleased to know that I am more than happy to adopt either system for your wedding.

Q: Do you play my guests requests?

A: I am happy to play your guests requests on the night - unless you have specifically asked me to avoid playing any particular songs. Sometimes couples ask their guests to write their favourite dancing song on the invitation RSVP slip. This way, you can proof read their requests and veto any bad ones!

Please let me know if you took this photo...I would love to credit your work. Thank you.

Q: How do I make my requests?

A: I have set up an online request form that guides you through the process of making the music requests for your wedding. If you have a really long list of songs, then you can always email it directly to me - we can chat about this nearer the time!

Q: What equipment do you use?

A: I use a professional sound and lighting rig that will deliver to your expectations. All of the equipment is PAT tested and serviced regularly and I have selected it all for its performance, durability and reliability. I also carry spare components and replacement parts so that I can repair any faults on-site. I use a Mackie sound system which will deliver a brilliant disco for up to 200 guests. If you are having a larger wedding then I would recommend that we hire in a larger sound system. My lighting rig changes as new technologies are developed, but it will always match the type of lighting that you find at your local nightclub.

I am also able to provide mood lighting (up-lighting) for the dancefloor and this can be hired for an additional fee. I charge a little bit more money for this because it takes me longer to set up and pack down. I have a really useful page on my website that tells you all about the decorative uplighters that I have available for hire.

Q: Are you fully insured?

A: Yes. I have £10,000,000 public liability insurance. This means that if anybody is injured or anything is damaged as a result of my equipment then I have insurance in place to cover the damages. I also have a full, enhanced CRB check. This is important for your piece of mind as I know that you will want to guarantee a safe environment for your guests and their families.

Q: What happens if you are ill and unable to attend the wedding?

A: This is a very good question - and you should definitely ask this of any musician or DJ you are looking to book! I have put a crisis plan in place to deal with this situation if it should arise. If it is a long-term injury or illness and I know in advance of your wedding, then I shall offer you the choice of a full refund so that you can book another DJ or I can find a replacement DJ for you instead. I have gotten to know several other really great local DJs and I often recommend brides to them when I receive an enquiry to DJ for a wedding on a date that I am already booked. I would check their availability and then offer you a choice from the DJs that are free.

If I am struck by a last minute illness or injury, then I would look to book you a replacement DJ from a reliable wedding entertainment agency. I will incur any additional costs myself, and if you are dissatisfied with the replacement DJs service in anyway then I shall offer you an amount of the money back, based on your reasons for complaint.

Q: Are there any hidden charges?

A: The prices quoted on the website are the standard fee to book me as your wedding DJ. If your venue has a lot of stairs (and no lift) or has other accessibility issues then I will need to hire a roadie to help me with the flight cases. The cost of this will be between £50 and £100 depending on the exact situation. There are two venues that I can think of that meet these criteria. The grand ballroom in the Shire Hall (Chelmsford) which requires cases to be lifted up several flights of stairs and the HMS Belfast function room which is on the middle of a battleship on the Thames (London)!

The only other time where the standard fees will not apply is for couples looking to book me for weddings at venues that are not in Essex or Hertfordshire. If your venue is more than an hour drive from Bishops Stortford and I decide to take the booking, then I would look to charge the cost of a single room in a cheap B&B or Travelodge.

Q: Who wrote all of these questions?

I did...

...I have compiled these questions from the most frequently asked questions that couples ask me when they make an enquiry to book me for their wedding. I hope that I have managed to answer some of your questions and if you would like any further information then please get in touch and I'll be happy to help.
